We simply wanted to hurt the Russians and freeing Afghanistan was a side effect.

I fully agree. The important priority was our own national interest. It just happened to co-inside with that of the Afghans.

I submit that this time around, again, the US probably would not have taken any military steps against the Taliban if it were not for our own interest - the need to uproot Al Qaeda.

The same is true about Iraq. Saddam was removed for many reasons, but primarily because he and his regime were perceived as a long term threat to our security.

On the other hand, Serbia a few years ago did not present any threat to the US, and, frankly, it is more difficult (if not impossible) to understand the reasoning for bombing the heck out of Yugo cities.

We live in an imperfect world.
