I disagree-
it undercuts the prior positive discrimination for other groups(you only imagine that there was a meritocracy-imo- of course)- which is why beneficiaries of the system, previous to affirmative action, are so threatened.
Failing to recognize there will always be discrimination, and never really be a true meritocracy, is wishful thinking, imo. Making the discrimination a little more fair to all, in terms of race, doesn't jeopardize anything, but the pride of certain people who secretly think that their race rules. Do I care a lot about what is really fair? No. because fairness, like merit, is pretty subjective. But I do care about the perception that people of color have of the system, and I would be pleased if they perceive it as more fair, to them. That's such a big thing- I don't think I could even put it in "fer" territory. |
