The % of the GDP has absolutely nothing to do with national security. Security has to do with plans, resources and methods. Current expenditures on 17-ton tanks and hardware assumes terrorists will be making a full frontal assault on America using tanks. It's idiotic in its mendacity. But the spineless Congress will of course go along with it, given the billions to be skimmed for campaigns.
That's a simple lie, promoted by empire-building bureacrats and profiteering lobbyists. Any military will want the maximum resources. Any leader worth their salt, like Eisenhower, will look at the facts. Ike saw the combination of defense contractors and DOD bureacracy as spinning out of the control or oversight of either Executive or Legislative branch. This kind of phony salesmanship "logic" is a good example of the lies being told to Americans.
Spending more money does not make Americans safe. Our military is overfunded by 50% already, which forces a need to find places around the world to invade, or cause trouble if there isn't any, like Afghanistan under Reagan, or Latin America constantly, and ME constantly. None of these areas had anything to do with American security, but have instead caused just the opposite, and therefore increased the need for more defense spending, in a vicious spiral.
This spiral is justified by tortuous logic such as "The Grand Chessboard". Have you read it? It's enlightening. |
