Hello Jay,

Be careful with any Russian plays. It's extremely hazardous to one's personal health and wealth to be playing games with the Russian authorities, who tend to play their games on un-level playing fields.

As regards Yukos specifically, it is completely within the Russian government's rights to "confiscate" the company (uncompensated to shareholders, I might add) should the government decide that it's in their best interests to do so, and that their laws can be used to justify the actions. Mikhail Khodorkovsky has been way more than just a thorn in the side of the current Russian administration. He has (at least twice) funded organized opposition parties, and is strongly suspected of having participated in activities (money laundering of rubles is just one example) that are currently illegal under Russian law. I'm not saying he did anything illegal; merely that he is suspected of having done so. He has also undermined Putin's international political positions by consistently speaking out against Putin's policies and Putin's administration. As the old saying goes, "payback is a bitch", and I wouldn't at all be surprised to see Yukos (the company) and Khodorkovsky (as an individual) pay dearly (read: financially) for Khodorkovsky's brash verbal outbursts.

There is a chance that Yukos could become a state-owned property in the near future. So, forewarned is forearmed...
