In a country where only 20% of the people have a passport and a healthy % of those are recent immigrants, the rest of the world is a strange, alien land for the vast majority of Americans.

Both sides are quicker to judge symbols and actions than understand them. But the rest of the world is bombarded with American culture and symbols much more than the US ever sees about them. They have a faint clue about us, while I doubt more than 20% of Americans (if that many) have the slightest idea that the Red Cross operates as the Red Crescent in the Muslim world, or why.
