The French-German-Russian group is not getting the attention it deserves in the US press, with all the focus on Iraq. Fact is, the Anglo world is sitting on the far side of a growing chasm from the new troika; when you look at a map and consider the current geopolitical scene, those three need each other a lot more than they need the US and the UK. Russia has the energy the others need for the next century or more; the Europeans offer trading partners, political stature on an international stage and eventually a security umbrella that would fulfill an old Gaullist dream of a united Europe from the Atlantic to the Urals.

Throw in China with equal allure and geographic advantages and you have a powerful combination that could leave the US and UK very, very alone in many ways.

The next 10-20 years ain't gonna be dull thanks to the Shrub kicking over this particular milk bottle. Without the Iraq crisis, it wouldn't have happened for decades if ever.
