WASHINGTON, Oct 27, 2003 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- Some 11.9 million crimes were
reported to the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) last year by city,
county and state law enforcement agencies, the FBI reported Monday.
The figure represented a rise of less than 1 percent from 2001, but 4.9 percent
lower than in 1998 and 16 percent lower than 1993.
Violent crimes, which stood at 1.4 million in 2002, saw a drop of less than 1
percent than the previous year, but murders rose by about 1 percent to 16,204.
The number of property crimes such as burglaries, thefts, larcenies and motor
vehicle thefts remained almost the same as that of the 2001, with an estimated
loss 16.6 billion US dollars.
In 2002, about 13.7 million arrests, excluding minor traffic offenses, were made
by law enforcement officials, with arrests for drug abuse and driving under the
influence accounting for almost 22 percent of the total.
About 95,100 forcible rapes were reported in 2002, an increase of 4.7 percent,
and 2.2 million burglaries were reported, a rise of 1.7 percent over 2001.
