If you are history buff, pick up a good diplomatic history from the 18th and 19th centuries and soak up the atmosphere of a truly multipolar world. You and I grew up in a bipolar Cold War order followed by what some thought would (or should) be a unipolar New American Century.

Now the game is shifting under our feet as the multidimensional modern world becomes very multipolar indeed, in all respects including military power. The MP game is played differently - you don't crash and bash, you don't play zero-sum "I'll kick your ass, bring it on!" games.

It's a much subtler game of chess with its own nuances and style. It will probably drive most Americans nuts. But we no longer have the clout to dictate how the game is played.

Their ball, their rules.
