IMHO we were doing more or less the right thing in a world run by NATO/UN/G8/WTO/etc and serving as the de facto leader of a sometimes contentious but mostly focused group that was building a post-Cold War world order.

Then we lost the plot big-time and flipped out on this unilateralist binge that plopped us in Iraq for no good reason, overextended and going broke in a hurry.

Moderation may be boring to some, but the pauses for reflection and the measured approach take care of most big problems before the zealots make them bigger.
