Panic,

My understanding, and I am no software guy, is that once the basic code is 64-bit clean, it is fairly straight forward to support a new ISA - especially if it is extension of something like x86-32.

Intel probably has more software guys than entire AMD x86 team. Add to that the $$$$ Intel can throw at a problem and my guesstimate is that it will take Intel no more than 6-12 months to squeeze in support for their desktop 64-bit platform.

Now that Barrett and other Intel executives are starting to imply they are working on a desktop 64-bit platform, there shouldn't be any doubts about Intel's plans about the subject.
