The area burning in San Diego around Mira Mesa, and Clairemont isn't exactly what you'd call forest. In fact, with the exception of the San Bernadino fire, most of what's burning in So Cal is more like overgrown scrub brush. However, I agree it should have been managed better, and the idiot tree huggers who are obsessed with the do nothing approach to maintenance are just as much to blame as the idiot money hungry developers who cook up sweet deals with the politicians to build in these areas(Mira Mesa, and several less rural pockets excluded). Furthermore, most of the homeowners fight any and all development around their homes vigorously. In some cases these "patches of nature" are nothing more than space for feral cats and dogs to multiply and give Bob Barker something to talk about on the Price is Right. The net result is exactly what you are seeing. Also keep in mind, that even though I rant about these problems, homeowners in these areas are warned, fined and coerced to maintain fire safety in the immediate area around their property. These rules may become even more strict in the near future, as the fire department realizes that these little canyons are great at smoking homes.
