I don't disagree with most of your conclusions as usual. However, I have to say that it has only been recently that Americans tend to (as you say) lump all Muslims and Islamic countries together.

I believe that this is largely their doing. Whenever there is a "jihad", there is a call for ALL Muslims to join. When 9/11 occurred, there were the pictures of the Palestinians dancing in the streets of Gaza.

I think you are blaming this too much on US ignorance and bigotry. Personally, I believe it is more a result of the fanatics themselves trying to organize all Muslims into a cohesive force to fight the infidel Westerners. From what I've read, they will never be successful, probably for the reasons you mention, but they sure are trying.
