Good point, rruff. Extremists on both sides have tried to use the cultural war boogeyman to whip people into groups to "clash" with other groups. I have seen it in most cultures and all sides of the political spectrum. An ugly side of human nature.

I never put much stake in a few scenes of people demonstrating somewhere. All you need is 50 people on a street corner and it makes good TV. Selective use of TV footage can prove any point of view you care to name.

I don't pretend to understand the motivations behind fanaticism of any stripe. All crazed fundamentalists are off their rocker in my book, be they political , religious, nationalist, whatever. I know you can't stomp them out with force or an equal but opposite dollop of anger and hatred. Hatred fans hatred, almost every time.

I reckon the best we can do is set the best example we can as a moderate, tolerant society and deploy our military resources carefully to meet the threats we can't deal with through political, economic or diplomatic means.

Not sexy - but moderates rarely are.
