Arnold versus Bush, now that's a rich one.

I get the impression that some of the Republican campaign people are uneasy with the whole Arnold situation. If Davis had stayed in and things had kept sliding, they'd have gone into the 2004 election with California uniformly pissed off at the Democrats, a very useful situation.

Now they have Arnold, who is likely to find that the problems he's facing are a little more complex than anything he's used to. If he makes an ass of himself - a lively possibility - he is likely to find that popularity is a fickle thing. He has just about enough time to translate the current anger at Democrats into anger at Republicans.

A great deal depends on the economy, of course. If the recovery accelerates, life will be much easier for Arnold, and for George, and of course, being politicians, they will be all too willing to take the credit.
