>>AC, any thoughts on Buffet's "Import Certificate" proposal?<<

Yes. It's bonkers. Buffett surprises me by often coming across as some kind of closet big government socialist. He also supports a more (i.e. more than now) progressive income tax and various other crackpot left wing schemes - just ask Ahnold, who dumped Warren five seconds after Warren opened his mouth. I can only ascribe it to some kind of conscious or subconscious guilt.

It is also a strikingly naive proposal, with enormous implications for trade and capital flows around the globe. The guy must have exceeded his limit for Cherry Cokes.

The "problem" of the trade deficit, if indeed it is a problem, which I think it is not, will be solved, to the extent it needs to be solved, by free market mechanisms.
