Yes, this seems out of proportion to the incident. Sometimes it is good to have a reputation that precedes you. It has a salutary effect on the enemy. The Army bypassed a lot of incidents to get to Baghdad quickly and may have given a different impression than the Marines, who engaged ANYONE who dared to fire on them and got there slower. Different tactics and maybe different results.
