By Space flight may
put China into new orbit

COMMENTARY
William Pesek Jr.

Perhaps it was a bizarre coincidence, but Moody’s Investors Service chose the day China’s first manned space flight ended successfully to upgrade its credit. The economic symbolism of China thrusting itself into the elite group of nations putting humans into orbit shouldn’t be missed. That’s especially true in Tokyo, where Beijing’s feat seems to be inspiring more awe than it is among Chinese.“We’ve just lost Asia’s space race,” laments Michiyaki Kudo, a 41-year-old natural-gas company executive. “It’s just a reminder that in Asia, Japan is becoming No. 2.”

Asia once looked to Japan for growth and leadership. Its economic might has been dwindling for over a decade, while China is booming and moving toward Japan’s economic orbit.
