That was not an assumption, it was stated in the article as fact.

There was no shortcut taken, the man had been interrogated on several occasions and refused to cooperate. Only when a little heavy handedness was shown did he give up the info.

You have no understanding of the military and unit cohesiveness if you are questioning this. Put yourself in the place of a soldier in that unit, and you found out your commanding officer saved your life, and that officer is facing charges because he used tactics "offensive" to some, there would be no question that there would be a morale problem.

It sounds very trite to say this but there is nothing "fair" in war. If you fight fair, you will lose, guaranteed.

We are in a war against terrorism. They are not fighting fair ( attacking UN, Red Cross, mosques, etc) and you're dreaming if you think they ever will.
