As Iraqis increasingly view the US as an army of occupation, al Qaeda can swell its ranks immensely by tapping a groundswell of anti-US sentiment -- and with several hundred attacks in recent days this is arguably exactly what we are seeing. The only issue is the extent of involvement of foreign fighters. In Vietnam we found ourselves pitted against an illusive enemy that we could never crush, short of killing everybody. The more we killed the more they fought. The more we captured, the more people's entire families joined the fight against us. When Cheney decided to unilaterally invade Iraq he sealed our fate.
