Ray,

For the Democrats to reprise the Dole nomination, they would have to select their nominee on the basis of seniority. Perhaps Ted Kennedy or Robert Byrd? <gg>

It is looking increasingly likely that the Democrats are going to nominate Howard Dean. Terry McAuliffe's plan to front load the primaries is going to backfire on him. One would hope that he will be unable find gainful employment elsewhere after he is booted from the DNC. Om the other hand, he has that Global Crossing money to fall back on.

Dean will be a big gamble for the Democrats. There are a lot of interesting contradictions in his past that will make interesting fodder for the GOP. He could be a McGovern type gift for the GOP. I have always felt that Nixon would have beaten McGovern even if the American people knew everything there was to know about Watergate. Who knows if Iraq will remain an issue next fall. Barring another 9/11 type event, the economy should be in decent shape.

I would expect Kerry, Gephardt and the rest of the pack to rapidly and aggressively rachet up their concerns about Dean's electability. AS is a pretty good barometer here. He mentions it at least five or six times a day. As I have noted previously, I expect AS to be a rabid Dean man sometime in March.

The GOP will not have to do much research on Dean. His primary opponents will have already filled in the blanks.

I fully appreciate your "one bite of the apple" philosophy, but I still think that the Democrats should draft Al Gore.
