If public opinion has shifted and few Iraqis still see us as "liberators" then your assertions about our "staying" are also unlikely to be valid. You would at least need to ask the Iraqis if they would prefer some other alternative -- like a much larger multinational force. We allowed Iraq to fall into chaos and have failed to provide security -- less security is obviously not what is needed or wanted. But if we are unable to do it, then Iraqis might rightly expect us to get the hell out of the way.
