Re "stewardship," there are differences of opinion about what that means. The folks at the extreme ends of the spectrum may be nuts. Preserving lands by not letting anyone in to even study them is pretty extreme. So is using land containing endangered species to race off-road vehicles. But I think that mainstream preservation is a reasonable interpretation of stewardship.

The biggest problem with the preservation approach is politics. If it could be accomplished in its purest form, it seems it would work. However, we end up with political compromises or political swings that implement it by half measures, which is how we end up with humans starting fires in places that haven't been tended and to which there are inadequate roads. We need to either do it one way or the other. It's the half-and-half implementation that causes the problems.

I don't think we can say that the preservationists are wrong or silly, merely that they are unrealistic in their expectations of success, and their half measures may kill what they are trying to save.
