I guess this is one of the places where I have a tough time with the current batch of Democratic presidential contenders. They're more politicians than they are leaders. Why would anyone want a weasel for President? We've had enough weasels for President already. What's so hard about taking a stand and sticking to it.

For starters, this whole assault rifle hype is absurd from front to back. The Second Amendment isn't about protecting rights to go deer hunting. It's about well armed Americans able to defend themselves against human enemies. On purely Constitutional grounds, it would be far easier to defend the ownership of an AK 47 than it would a Weatherby 300 Magnum.

The Weatherby will shoot circles around the AK 47. Muzzle velocity for the Weatherby is 3500 fps compared to 2300 fps for the AK 47. At 200 yards, the AK 47 has dropped 6 inches vs. the Weatherby still shooting flat, and the Weatherby is delivering 2800 foot pounds of energy at that range vs. 850 for the AK 47.

For a short barreled rifle, the AK 47 is comparable to a 30-30, although the 30-30 is still more accurate and hits harder than the AK 47. So why the ban on "assault" rifles? They're basically cheap junk the Russians supply to the guys they use for tripping mines.

Who gives a rip if a collector wants to own one? If you get right down to it, I'd much rather see a criminal type armed with a weapon that doesn't shoot straight, than armed with a sporting rifle where the target is actually in some kind of danger of being hit other than by pure dumb luck.

The real question is why Dean is willing to play the fool by waffling on such a silly subject in the first place. Our fore fathers had good reasons for writing the Constitution the way they did, and the President's first duty is to defend that Constitution. I can't imagine voting for someone not willing to abide by the laws of the land, or who is too timid to stand up to senile old grannies who have bought into hype designed to turn America into a slave state.
