Are we supposed to be smarter than the market?

If you don't believe you have an edge over the market, then you should not be directing your own investments. So, yes, we are supposed to be smarter than the market, or work harder, or have a superior ability to process information, or be more adept at valuation, etc. No matter what your method is, its continued success depends on being "smarter than the market". There is no way around this.
