The logical conclusion of protectionism is a return to subsistence-farming and hunter-gathering.
Why stop at nations?
Why don't we buy things only produced in our own states, cities, towns?
Hell - if you don't live on my street and believe in my Gods then I aint buying your stuff.

As soon as we (humans) formed groups, we were admitting the need for the division and specialisation of labour to ensure our progress.
I have no intention of growing my own tomatoes - I will leave that to the farms in Spain and Italy to do. (I live in the UK).

The protectionists are of the same mentality as the Amish.

Yes you can exist in isolation, but if we all go back to living in our designated caves where will the engines of progress come from.
How could Al Gore have invented this great device that means Nigerians can lurk while Kiwis chat to Brazilians about Americans, with all of us still dressed in our pyjamas?

The trend of civilisation is positive, though we will advance in fits and starts, making sure that we cock things up along the way.
Our own (personal) views - pro or con - protectionism are actually irrelevant.
It is coming, holding hands with its first cousin - competitive currency devaluations.
It is all part of TEOTWAWKI.
The reason why life repeats is that we do the same things again and again.
Politicians have to get re-elected and if this means demonising nations and people, and denying the very beliefs that define us as a civilisation - then so be it!

Onwards! Over the cliff!

p.s. we are in a cyclical bull at the moment so TEOTWAWKI has been postponed.
