I suggest to you that the onset of this particular war was not the time to adopt a newfound embrace of fundamentalism of any stripe, not if one is clearly focused on winning. Nothing "New" about it, Karen. See the Movie, "Gods and Generals," when it comes out on DVD. Men fight for their buddies around them, and for their God. Seventeen year olds think they will live forever, that's why you want them in combat units. But Religion is good motivator in War. "Bible Belt" kids are easier to motivate than secular ones.
