Zicam® Induced Anosmia
Bruce W. Jafek MD Miriam Linschoten, Ph.D Bruce W. Murrow, MD, Ph.D

Introduction: Zinc is extensively utilized throughout the body, supporting the activity of approximately 100 enzymes, the immune system, wound healing, the sense of taste and smell, and DNA synthesis. Zinc supports normal growth and development. The deleterious effects of both deficiency and toxicity (acute and chronic) are described. Beneficial zinc absorption tales place via enteral, parenteral, or cutaneous routes. Direct application to the olfactory epithelium, on the other hand, has long been known to be toxic, producing anosmai. This toxicity is thought to be due to the direct effect of the divalent zinc ions on olfactory receptor cells. Apparently overlooking this toxicity, however, intranasal Zicam® (Zinc gluconate) has recently been recommended as a treatment for the common cold.
Methods: We will present a series of patients with post-Zicam® anosmia. The mechanism of drug toxicity will be analyzed.
Results: While interindividual variation n drug response and drug toxicity is apparent, post Zicam® anosmia appears to be dose-related and permanent
Conclusion:Zinc ions remain toxic to human olfactory epithelium, and continued reports of total, probably irreversible, asomia, can be expected as long as intranasal zinc gluconate gel (Zicam®)continues to be used. The recent extension of the use of Zicam® to the pediatric age group is particularly alarming since the group is less likely to be able to describe the anosmia. Immediate discontinuation of the use of intranasal zinc is recommended.

TheTruthseeker reminds investors that previous "Speculatice Strong Buy: on MTXX should be disregarded.
The Truthseeker Reiterates "Strong Speculative Buy" on Matrixx Initiatives Inc. and encourages consumers to dispose of their Over The Counter FDA approved Cold Remedies based on Matrixx's CEO's Comments during Conference Call.
Dateline Silicon Investor 10/30/03 Today The Truthseeker announced that Matrixx Initiatives Inc. (Nasdaq NM:MTXX) is his new "Strong Speculative Buy" focus stock of the week.
On 10/24/03 Matrixx Initiative had their end of the quarter conference call. During the call the CEO was asked if Procter and Gamble and other Over the Counter drugs were Matrixx's competitors in the 3 Billion dollar over the counter cold remedy market. The CEO agreed that yes they where Matrix competitors and that their products only gave you a good night sleep and "That they did not reduce the duration of the common cold like Matrixx does with Zicam which shortens the duration of the cold 3 times faster."
Matrixx Homeopathic None FDA approved Cold Remedy is a Miracle Cure. Homeopathic Zicam seems to be taking market share away from such well known companies as Johnson and Johnson, Merk, Bristal Meyers, Procter & Gamble and various other Over the Counter Cold Remedies. The Truthseeker personally purchased his Homeopathic Zicam right next to Robitusin at his local Wall Greens. These Pharmaceutical companies have spent billions on remedies which they claimed helped consumers with colds.
Unlike these Pharmacudical Giants that have spent billions on research. One of Zicam's main researchers, R. Steven Davidson has a degree from a Diploma Mill.http://www.siliconinvestor.com/readmsg.aspx?msgid=19415... diploma Dr. Davidson was the chief executive officer and a director of Gel Tech, LLC. At Gel Tech, Dr. Davidson raised capital for the market launch and distribution of the Zicam™ cold remedy. He led the marketing team that took Zicam™ from an unknown entity to one of the top medications in its class. In fact R.S. Davidson with 60 citations according to "The Gang of Five" t-mag.com
"Dr. Davidson received his MBA in International Finance and Ph.D. in Biopharmaceutical Project Management from the American University of Asturias, Spain" zengen.com
In fact Matrixx can boast that DR Davidson is the only person that The Truthseeker could find that has a MBA/PHD in "Biopharmaceutical Project Management"
ETIOLOGY OF THE COMMON COLD By R. Steven Davidson, Ph.D. and Charles B. Hensley, Ph.D. Message 19415803
The Truthseeker asks prospective investors to not consider that DR Davidson received his degree from a Diploma Mill because every online tout has said "Try Zicam, It works" even though many of the research studies done on Zinc have been tainted in scandal such as the Cleveland study which was mentioned in a Bill Alpert Baron's story on Martixx competitor Quigley.

Here's the Motley Fool's on QGLY & the Barron's Article:http://www.fool.com/Rogue/1997/Rogue970131.htm
Based on: "ZICAM Cuts Duration of Common Cold From 10 - 14 Days to 1.5 Days"http://www.siliconinvestor.com/readmsg.aspx?msgid=19415... zicam and based on the CEO's comments at the conference call
Today at 2:58 P.M. The Truthseeker has purchased 1 share of MTXX through his stock broker at a price of $14.20. The Truthseeker has asked his broker to keep this one share in a "CASH ACCOUNT" and it is not to be loaned out to anyone that may want to short the stock much like broker dealer GunnAllen did in 1999 with over 4 million shares which represented over 70% of the tradable float: Donald J. Gunn JR's CRD# 1442917 Alleged Scheme siliconinvestor.com.
Based on all other Pharmaceutical companies going out of business because of Martixx Miracle Homeopathic Cure that reduces the duration of the Common Cold to 1.5 days and especially because of the CEO's comments during the conference call Truthseeker puts a conservative price value of 6 to 12 months of 1 bilion dollars a share.
Thus far, there are supposedly 15 studies that have evaluated the use of zinc on the common cold. Per a summary in a study funded by MTXX,[1] seven (7) of those studies showed zinc had a beneficial effect, while eight (8) did not. Of the seven (7) showing beneficial effects, two are somewhat older studies published in the mid-1980’s.[2] At least two others involved researchers that had a financial interest in the company whose product they were testing (Quigley Corporation’s (NASDAQ: QGLY) Cold-Eeze®[3] One, and probably two, others were funded by MTXX.[4] -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [1] . The Truthseeker warns investors that trading in shares of MTXX is risky. But the Truthseeker joins other analysts of MTXX like on line stock tout Dan Zimmerman WHO IN 1999 PUT A $100 PRICE TARGET ON MTXX/GUMM Message 19441679
On a cautionary not Matrixx was sued by a person in Michigan which says he lost his sence of smell using Zicam the company's flagship product Message 19446783
Truthseeker will go more into the analysts of MTXX further when he reiterates his reiteration of his "Strong Speculative Buy" on Matrixx Initiatives Inc. in the coming days.
Disclosure: The author is being sued by Matrixx Initiative and has been accused of stealing their trade secrets and product roll out schedule. Furthermore The author has been accused of slander and of "SHORTING MTXX stock" and Matrixx Initiatives wants him to "GIVE UP HIS ILLGOTTEN GAIN"
The author has NEVER shorted stock, nor did he ever steal MTXX trade secrets and roll out plan or slander the company and has not been compensted for posting on message boards.
The author did purchase 1 share of MTXX today for $14.20 plus a $5 comission and now is a faithfull long
All of The Truthseeker posts in SI and Yahoo are his opinion
Even though Zicam did nothing for the author when he tried it on a Cold it does not mean it will not work for others
Truthseeker has had one product that has worked and is a true cure for the common cold which nobody can denie.
