George -- The information provided in the link you gave is accurate.

Keep in mind that the CSMA/CD aspect of Gigabit Ethernet only comes into play when a half-duplex link is established.

Full-duplex (the norm for switch-to-switch and switch-to-node) connections do not utilize CSMA/CD and therefore can operate at distances of up to 550 meters over multimode and at least 3 kilometers over sigle mode fiber.
