US anticipates borrowing a record $117 bln in Oct-Dec
Monday November 3, 3:09 pm ET

WASHINGTON, Nov 3 (Reuters) - The U.S. government, looking to fund what is expected to be another record annual budget deficit, said on Monday it plans to borrow about $117 billion from the capital markets in the October-December quarter.

If the projection -- released on Monday as part of Treasury's quarterly borrowing estimates -- holds up, it will be the largest amount ever borrowed in a single quarter so far, outpacing the $111 billion the government borrowed in the January-March period.

Treasury also said it expects it will have to borrow even more in the January-March 2004 quarter, about $160 billion. But the July-September quarter ended with lower-than-expected borrowing of $82 billion instead of a projected $104 billion, Treasury said.
