Wrong way 'round. The way its done in a population like Switzerland is by keeping doctors and treatment as private enterprise. But they guarantee a better level of competition by single-sourcing the insurance. Like auto insurance in Calif, everyone is required to have some minimal level of medical insurance. It amounted to $140/mo. for my brother who was earning $140k/yr.

His impression was the medical care was good, you could, if you wished, get additional treatment on your own dime for things not covered by the basics. The gov't doesn't subsidize it, but it makes drugs cost 1/4th the cost, and cheaper treatments.

I don't believe the drug co. argument that they need to extort 4X prices from Americans to do research on drugs already made available from NIH. They have no credibility, and more lobbyists in Washington than any other industry, and for good reason.
