Four figures for cholesterol testing is a bit much. I have regular blood testing for my synthroid levels, and I don't pay nearly that much for my results. I recently had a full spine MRI that cost $2700.00. (That is $400.00 more than I paid for my first Volkswagen. <gg>). All of it was covered by insurance.

But honestly, I almost always ask my providers what the costs will be for procedures including my dentist. Most of them look at me like I'm nuts, but they get me the information or point me in the right direction. It takes detective work, but when it's in our best interest, I don't mind at all.

Although I never feel like I'm on the dole......I pay a very hefty monthly health insurance premium.....I am going to look into alternatives. What I have in mind something like a medical savings account where we carry catastrophic insurance while making monthly contributions to a medical savings account. If available, we'd like to earn interest while we take draws as needed for exams and minor health issues. Hopefully it would be taxed at the special rate for medical deductions.
