Besides, I personally think the fears of America becoming a Nazi-like police state are even more irrational than the fears of terrorism. And I think most Americans are smart enough to know the difference between acts of security and acts of totalitarianism.

Absolutely.

This notion that Ashcroft's DOJ has started us down some slippery slope to a police state are just extremist over-reaction.

In difficult times it is necessary for us to give up some of our "rights", although we do not have to give up broad, fundamental rights. When the difficulty has passed, our judicial system will move back the other direction (probably, so far that we are once again at risk).

These are just a few years out of a long past and a long future. Although, the thought of some liberals screaming that we should pay reparations to those held at Guantanamo Bay does make me bristle a bit...
