Dabum et al.

FWIW, in the bad old days I used to run in and out of various banana republic for vacation since I could fly for free (a friend ran an air freight co. (legit) at Miami Int.). I walked around in Panama when Noriega was running the show and a fellow Yank advised to be careful what I said if I made any calls back to the US since all international lines were monitored. I saw an American kid with his head shaven brought out for what we'd consider an arraignment in our criminal court in another place. On one cargo flight back a Cuban who had jumped ship in Panama had managed to get on our plane as a stowaway in Panama.

As a lawyer who has, as recently as this morning, appeared on behalf of criminally accused indigents, (not all of whom are guilty) I have been able to assert things that were not popular. Many years ago I was quoted on the front page of our local rag as I accused the police of doing an incompetent investigation in a murder case that allowed an innocent man to sit for 4 1/2 months. Yeah, I like our flag, but the little guy can still whack the establishment over the head with the constitution in both the criminal and civil legal arenas. I am not happy with many aspects of our system, there are a lot of brain-dead bastards in public office, but it beats what I've seen first hand in other places. (And I'm not one of those right-wingers by any stretch of the imagination.)
