Kemp is very slick at manipulating the terms of debate - never quite presidential himself but a sharp cookie, no doubt.

Notice how he bases almost his whole piece on the idea that taxes and expanding democracy are the buzz words. No mention of deficits or reckless foreign adventures that squander American resources and lives without a serious security threat.

Now think back a bit - who used to oppose deficits and becoming the world's policeman?

Republicans.

The Beltway crowd is all the same - they wouldn't know a lasting bedrock principle if they crashed their Beemer into one on their way to the next Georgetown dinner party (Washington's equivalent of your famous truffle-filled cafes).

If Bush loses next year, the Monday morning QBs (pun intended with Kemp) will be asking why Bush didn't reach out and fish among the moderate Democrats instead of driving them to the brink of exasperation with his crusades.

I don't know how this story ends. But I expect more slick manipulation on the way.
