R&D SPENDING OVERTAKES GERMANY

Spending in China on research and development outpaced Germany to reach almost $60 billion, ranking China in the top 10 investors in R&D, an Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development study found. The OECD groups most of the world's major industrialized nations. Non-OECD countries, led by China, accounted for 17% of world R&D spending, according to the latest issue of the Science, Technology and Industry Scoreboard. "R&D expenditure in China grew rapidly over the past decade and in 2001 reached almost $60 billion," the report said. "This is behind the U.S. ($282 billion) and Japan ($104 billion), but ahead of Germany ($54 billion)."
