10:16 ET Challenger reports a surprisingly large 171,874 layoff announcements in Oct : Challenger reports a surprisingly large 171,874 layoff announcements in Oct -- more than twice the Sep pace (125%) and the largest since Oct of last year. The data isn't seasonally adjusted which appears to contribute to the upturn -- a 150% increase was seen in Oct 2002. By industry, autos led the decline followed by retail, telecommunications and industrial goods. The layoff announcements lead payroll growth given the time lag between announcement and actual layoffs.
