The neocons in charge are all the hardliners of the Reagan era and their neo successors. McCain doesn't see eye to eye with these guys at all. In fact if could be open and honest about it, he wants them out. I doubt any of them were democrats in the 70's and even if they were, that's 35 years ago.

I think your description is one more piece of evidence of neocon deception and deflection, that is to deny the neocons exist as a hard-right unified force around the Bushies trying to manipulate everything. They dont like to be exposed or pinned down. They always blame everything on someone else and try to stay invisible as possible, like Cheney hiding out in his bunker or hiding behind the flag. Cheney is the king of the neocons and stonewalls all attempts to expose him. No matter how much smoke is coming from his bunker he won't let anyone see the fire.
