nope, if you read about the life of Mozart or Beethoven, or on the paint medium side Degas etc., those guys were creating for profit, or at least that is what their aim was- to eventually make money, just like scriptwriters and film people today.

The producers and directors are businesspeople but not the writers and actors. Only one guy I can think of from the 1800s really paraphrases the modern day concept of "starving artist" - Gaugain.
