I currently watching the "Race From the White House" on CNN. (Apologies to Jon Stewart). There is one thing that is perfectly obvious. Nine candidates is a miserable format for determining the key elements of the campaign to end George Bush's assault on democracy.

Now, I think that Al Sharpton is a fine public orator, and a good spokesman for a particular point of view. But he's acting much as Ralph Nader did in the 2000 election to sow disruption and distraction. Giving Sharpton the bully pulpit is remarkably counter-productive for the Democrats.

Carol Mosely-Braun? Fine patriot, but why in the world is the Democratic Party shooting itself in the foot by distracting attention from a candidate who might actually have half a chance at being competitive against the foul and despicable dirty tricks of Karl Rove.

Lieberman, Kuchinich, Edwards and Gephardt also should leave the stage for similar reasons.

IMO, what the Democrats need to do is to what is always done when a weak candidate refuses to leave the stage. Use the party machinery to convince the weak candidates that the good of the party, and the good of the country is being ill-served by the candidate's grandstanding. Offers of ambassadorships often work wonders. <gg>
