The U.S. government considered the Khmer Rouge to be Cambodian patriots, and supported them for years after the Vietnamese invasion. As is so often the case, we were willing to overlook the fact that they were also mass murderers. It served our interests to back them, just as it served our interests to support Saddam Hussain while he was killing Communists and Islamists, and waging a war of aggression against Iran, and gassing his Kurds.
