I agree with your thoughts, and IMO it should be *much more difficult* to obtain a driver's license. Unfortunately too many drivers don't bother worrying about having a valid driver's license, and they will drive despite having a suspended license.

In our area two children from the same family were killed last week by a "nanny" who ran over the curb, and hit the children and their mother while they were riding their bikes on the sidewalk.

From this article: ...."was charged with driving with a suspended license, a misdemeanor. The Department of Motor Vehicles pulled her license in March because she had no insurance, and again in July because she failed to appear in court for a speeding ticket."

The driving record for this woman is unbelievable, and it is amazing IMO that she was working as a "nanny".

"A review of Barreto's DMV driving record shows that she had several run-ins with the law. In July of 2000, she was convicted of driving drunk. She was also convicted of reckless driving in January of 2001, and of speeding in October of 2002. Her license is currently suspended because in March she didn't have proper insurance, and in July she didn't appear in court for three violations, one for driving at an unsafe speed."
