I *think* we finally learned the folly of chain letters (I don't *think* anybody even bothers to try them any more), so perhaps there is hope of societal learning. However, I think the "it's different this time" arguments aren't present in chain letters - circumstances are pretty "stationary" and people recognize that. It's too easy for Wall Street "experts" to convince everybody that they should throw them their money, though, and people just can't seem to draw the historical parallels.

Frankly, unless we build an institutional self-defense mechanism that can't be dismantled, things will probably never change. As long as there is greed, that is. There's probably higher chance of reducing greed than learning the lessons of history.
