Clark: 'I've given up everything' to serve Nov 5, 2003
Describing his commitment to public service and his presidential campaign, Democrat Wesley Clark on Tuesday compared himself to some of his rivals who haven't given up their day jobs to seek the nomination.
The retired Army general was a guest on New Hampshire Public Radio, where a caller asked him to explain why he joined the race. Clark explained that he is driven by a desire to serve, not personal ambition.
"I'm ambitious for one thing and one thing only: I want to see this country be what it can be and should be," he said.
Clark listed the sacrifices he has made, including uprooting his family and alienating longtime friends.
"I've given up all my businesses, I've given up all my boards," he said. "The other guys don't give up their positions, they're in the Senate ... I've given up everything."
A Clark spokesman said the comment wasn't met as a criticism of the three senators running for president: John Edwards of North Carolina, John Kerry of Massachusetts and Joe Lieberman of Connecticut.
"He was just explaining his personal situation: He is not holding a job right now," said Clark spokesman Bill Buck.
