There are about 5 million military voters including their families, vets and close friends. Those voters will go overwhelmingly for Bush if Dean is nominated. But in the Army poll, Clark beats Bush 45-36% and Kerry gets 18%.
Dean scores 7%. A Kerry-Clark or Clark-Kerry ticket could therefore take the majority of these voters away from Bush and that alone could decide the election. The military vote in Florida is very large.
