Why isn't our gov't giving us the numbers? That would end the speculation. And if they don't know, why don't they?

Why would you expect them to know?

They have all the records......they should be able to make a reasonable estimate.

To the extent they do have an idea it would be preliminary and subject to a possibly large revision (and if the revision is up the administration will be attacked for it). Also any number except a very very small one will be used to inflame anti-American feelings. Still I wouldn't be against some number, I just don't see not releasing an official number as being sinister.

How can the American public determine whether this war is in their best interest without knowing all the facts? How can they determine if this war is going well without some benchmarks?

The administration is very good at saying things are not that bad and then rattling off a bunch of items like power is back on in the Sadr City district of Bagdad. Well, how can anyone know if that is really all that good or not? In the past couple of weeks, the administration has been going on about how there is more power now than before the war. Well, that sounds good but it turns out right before the war, there were power shortages in Iraq. So their boasting is meaningless.

Put in that context, the withholding of Iraqi deaths does seem sinister to someone who already has reason to distrust this administration. If this war is so good for the Iraqis why withhold that information from them? The more secretive we are, the more there will be rumors that exaggerate the real facts.
