The response had nothing to do with viewers, it was from the GOP, starting with the RNC calling for Congressional pre-censorship before anyone had even seen the show:

Very American, like McCarthy was very American.

Had they not been spineless, CBS would have greater viewership than ever. Instead they knuckled under what a GOP pundit recently said was Republican domination of our government and implied threats of the FCC, among other things. It wasn't a lack of sponsors nor lack of viewers.
