Interesting theory. You must remember, however, that Communists tried to compete with us on our playing field, in the real material world... They thought that they will overcome us economically, etc. Communism really sucked both as a religion and as a pragmatic plan for action.

Islamic extremists act and talk as if the only thing which matters is whether or not people and things are in line with what - they think - would be in accordance with God's will.

Reality eventually disproved Communism, but extreme Islamism is impossible to prove wrong, which makes it, I suppose, a much better (and perhaps more dangerous) ideological weapon then Communism ever was.
