Semitool posts larger loss on inventory writedown

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov 4 (Reuters) - Semiconductor equipment manufacturer Semitool Inc. (NasdaqNM:SMTL - News) on Tuesday posted a quarterly net loss that widened almost five-fold from a year ago on a large write-down of obsolete inventory and as demand slowed during the summer months.

The Kalispell, Montana-based company said it had a net loss for the fourth quarter ended Sept. 30 of $14 million, or 49 cents a share, compared with a year-ago net loss of $2.89 million, or 10 cents a share.

Revenue fell 30 percent to $26.1 million from $37.2 million.

Excluding a write down of 41 cents a share for obsolete inventory, or $19.1 million pretax, Semitool said it had a loss of $2.06 million, or 7 cents a share.
