The fact is there was no threat and everybody knew it -- including the US.
As Brumar pointed out to you, France stated in PUBLIC that Saddam had WMDs! Their argument was that even though Saddam had WMDs, he was "contained" enough not to need invasion.
and that France would help the US know about it out of pure self-interest
France knows that a) the US is the first target, not France (and France intends to keep it that way by appeasement), and b) if Saddam did manage to fund a successful WMD attack, it would not be France who would be called on to clean up the mess, but the US. Thus it was no skin off their nose!
Some uncontraverted facts about Saddam:
1) Iraqi intelligence aided in the 1993 attack against the World Trade Center. The chief conspirator fled American justice - straight to Baghdad
2) Saddam paid Zawahiri $300,000 in 1998; thus, he had already funded Al Qaida
3) Iraqi intelligence was aiding an funding Ansar al Islam, an al Qaida-affiliated Islamist organization
4) Saddam had a long history of making and using bio and chem weapons, even giving up billions in revenue to hide his programs from the UN in defiance of UN sanctions
5) Saddam was actively training Islamist terrorists in Salman Pak
6) Saddam was proclaiming himself victor against America, louder and louder, and adopting the Islamist program in public.
7) Containment and sanctions were breaking down, aided and abetted by France and Russia.
Now, maybe you could look at these facts after 9/11 and conclude there was no threat. Boy, am I glad that you are not President! |
