LOL! That's a load of crap. History is full of examples of of guerilla warfare. Where do you think the term "guerilla" comes from? It refers to the Spaniards fighting to kick out the French under Napoleon. Escaping, evading, multiple river crossings, etc are standard tactics. Mao's victory more to the incompetence of the Nationalists than his own so-called genius.

As for the dispute over the distance covered, I wouldn't be too concerned. This is just a good "sound-byte" to help generate publicity for the hiker's inevitable forthcoming book. Who knows, maybe Hollywood will pick up the story and make a movie about the Long March.
